New Red Saddle For My Old Bike

August 24, 2014 in Cycling by MG

I finally purchased a new red saddle for my old bike. I don’t think I have posted much lately, let alone posted anything about riding my bicycle again. If you read My Bike and My Cycling Shoes Are Waiting post from November of last year, you would know that I started cycling again.

In the photo in that post, which I am posting here again with an arrow to my bike, you can see the old saddle with all the scuffles from my pre-year 2000 falls.  That was probably the cheapest gel saddle in the market a the time I purchased my bike back in 1992. My hubby went through a whole inventory of saddles throughout the years we were riding in his quest for the perfectly comfortable ride. But my 1991 Specialized Allez Epic only had one saddle.  I remember the day we purchased our bikes, I did not feel like making yet another decision. So I basically did make a decision by selecting the cheapest saddle with the most gel.   I thought that I would eventually replace it with something lighter, smaller and better fitted for my anatomy.  But I never changed it!  Why fix something that isn’t broken?  I never experienced pain, discomfort nor chafing with that cheap, ugly, huge and obviously comfortable gel saddle.

Fast forward… to 2013 when I had my old bike tuned up and I started riding again… and that old comfortable saddle felt hard as a rock.   Well, it has been 13 years…everything changes.  I am older…the saddle is older too.  So…I started riding while experiencing pain and discomfort and while also searching for a new saddle.   What did my search consist of? Well, Lilia Peraza here, who researches every purchase until she is 100% absolutely sure that “that product” is the best that her budget can afford, broke a few rules with this saddle.  Weight and size are usually the top criteria used for the selection of saddles.  My criteria for this purchase?  It had to be pretty, red, cushy and  no more than $100.   So, it was definitely not a very scientific research.

So…I went  for the Selle SMP TRK Lady Saddle.  I ended up buying it at eBay for $69.99 with free shipping.  I should have it in a couple of weeks, so I will keep you posted.
